Used indoors or out, natural limestone paving is used to achieve an attractive, easy to clean and safe floor surface. Used outdoors, in gardens, terraces or swimming pool areas, a rough textured finish is usually specified. Indoors, the surface is normally smooth surfaced and treated with a water proof silicone based sealant to prevent absorption of any liquid and to facilitate regular cleaning.
The flooring is usually laid over a damp proof membrane to prevent rising dampness by capillary action. Further, the tiles should be laid over good quality and appropriate materials to ensure a stable bed underneath.
Wall cladding can be used both on the exterior and the interior. Wall cladding is generally classified as rustic wall cladding (example below), rustic cladding in regular courses, smooth cladding in regular courses (emulating typical Maltese building stone courses) and aged smooth cladding also in regular courses (emulating an aged typical Maltese wall)
The rustic wall cladding is approximately 30mm thick and of irregular size while the smooth stone is approximately 20mm thick, 540mm long and 275mm high. It is affixed to a suitable surface by means of a regular cement mix or use of a proprietary adhesive. Rustic stone cladding is usually untreated and allowed to age naturally, while smooth cladding can be stained to desired shade or to simulate aging or silicone sealed to retain whiteness of the stone.
